Celebrating 11 Years!

When US Wellness Meats was founded back in 2000, we were raising and selling our grass-fed beef products only.  After a few short years in business we realized we needed to widen our horizons as there are so many other great products we could be offering!  So we started to branch out into grass-fed dairy and lamb products, and things continued to grow from there.  We would not be the company we are today without the other amazing farmers and producers who contribute to our business.

We get customer questions weekly about the different sources of our products and where they are raised, so we decided an in-depth blog post would be a great way to address all of these questions at once!

We’ll start at the beginning…

missouri, grass-fed beef
Beef: Our beef is raised in the heart of the Midwest.  Most of our current production comes from three of the founding members of the company located in Northeast Missouri and West Central Illinois.  We enjoy long summers with abundant rainfall to keep our pastures green most of the year.  We bale plenty of those warm weather grasses in the summer so the cattle enjoy those same grasses when snow is on the ground.
 tasmania, grass-fed beef
We also source hard to come by cuts (such as hangar steaks, flanks, etc) from a farm run by personal friends of ours in picturesque Tasmania.  This island is the ideal place for grazing animals as they have a temperate climate that allows for grazing year round, and no hormones or GMOs are even allowed on the island.  Both our Midwest and Tasmania cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished.
grass-fed lamb, mutton
Lamb: Our lamb is also a Missouri product.  Raised just south of US Wellness headquarters near Perry, MO our lambs are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished.  They enjoy lush Missouri pastures and plenty of rainfall.
grass-fed bison, grass-fed buffalo, bison, buffalo
Bison: Our bison are roaming around the open pastures of the Dakotas and Northern Plains and our farmers there are dedicated to improving the native grasses of the area, and ensuring the natural way of life bison have been accustomed to for decades.  Our bison products are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished.

Pork: All of our pork products are GAP-certified, meaning they are raised in the best conditions possible.  Our pork comes from Heritage Acres which is a group of small, local Missouri farmers providing the finest quality, antibiotic-free pork.

Poultry: We actually have two different poultry farms raising animals for US Wellness Meats.  Oaklyn Plantation in Darlington, South Carolina raises all of our free range 20-lb chicken bundles and ships those direct from the farmDue to growing interest and frequent customer requests, Oakland Plantation also started raising soy-free chickens in the summer of 2011.

Our second producer is in Oklahoma, and they raise free range birds for our smaller chicken packages.  All of their birds are raised under sunny Oklahoma skies on a non-GMO feed ration, in addition to the grass, sticks and bugs they enjoy on a daily basis.

Rabbit: Gourmet rabbit is one of the best kept secrets here at US Wellness Meats.  Our rabbit comes from a small farm in Michigan.

Seafood: Our seafood products come from Vital Choice, one of the premier wild-caught seafood providers in the country.  Their products are certified sustainable, and most products are caught off the west coast and surrounding waters.  The only exception is our wild-caught raw shrimp which comes from a different company fishing off the coast of Mexico.

Dairy:  We are very lucky to be able to source grass-fed dairy products, without any added growth hormonesOur Pure Irish Kerrygold Butter is grass-fed from Irish cattle.  We have two different Amish dairies- one in Indiana, the other in Pennsylvania, who supply us with raw, grass-fed cheese as well as four different varieties of goat cheese.

Olive Oil: One of the newest additions to our store is Extra Virgin Olive Oil, produced by Chaffin Family Orchards in Oroville, CA.  Most of their trees are over 100 years old and all the olives are hand-picked.  They use the animals on their farm to help with trimming and pruning – check out the goats on weed control!

We have carefully collaborated with like-minded farmers and individuals that hold their products to the same standards we believe in for our company. Long story short, we have built our business over the past eleven years while respecting our animals and our environment. We enjoy the products, just like our customers, so it remains our goal to offer the best selection possible.

The meat I'm interested in the most is lamb or mutton: Stores up our way don't carry lamb except on holidays.

I've always found your Newsletters to be a refreshing alternative to most of the other newsletters that I receive. The fact that you BOTH raise, and finish your meats in the grass-fed style seperates you from the majority of people that also offer grass-fed meat for sale. Being A St.Louis Mo. native, there is a distinct difference in taste and texture, and I look forward to ordering more as my budget permits....

Congratulations on 11 years! I'm a new subscriber - found you via Mark's Daily Apple. I haven't made my first purchase - yet. But I'm eyeballing the rabbits, especially!

My wife and I are just "entering in" to the world of grass-fed, healthier meats and other more organic, natural type foods. On a very tight budget, so it is a great challenge, and we are constantly looking for the best buys and ways to try out new foods. Your offerings are amazingly diverse and very interesting. Would love to try them all in time! Live in Northern Indiana, and also seek out local sources for all these things. Thank you for adding such variety to the market, and for insisting on purity and high quality!

Over the past few years, we have enjoyed all of your grass-fed meats, pork and free-range poultry. We especially love your pemmican, braunschweiger, and snack sticks. Thank you for selling healthy meats that cannot be found anywhere in our area!

I am just starting Paleo this week after being a raw vegan. I am so happy that you guys have humanely treated animals! It makes the transition a lot easier on me knowing that farms like yours exist. I know that meat is a healthy decision for me, but merging that with my love for the environment and animals has never been an easy decision. Thank you for setting the bar and a great example for the rest of the meat industry and we as consumers to look to.

I absolutely love your products and wish more farmers would put the same care into the raising of their meats. I'm sure that the "other guys" are a bit embarrassed or even ashamed to tell their consumers where and how their product is raised. Keep up the good work!

Living in California I am glad to hear that your Olive oil is from around here. Oroville is right up the road for me and is the perfect place to grow olives for oil.

I have yet to try your rabbit, pork or lamb but the grass fed steaks are absolutely the best, my favorites are the filet mignon and large top sirloin!

Thanks for keeping me healthy with your steaks!

Loved this blog - I never realized it was here! This information was very helpful because it reassured me that the non-poultry offerings are grass-fed and grass-finished. Love the soy-free chicken offering. Thank you for letting us know what's in our food!

I want to thank you for allowing me to sign on to your newsletters. They are very helpful! Even though I don't buy any grass-fed meat for the moment, I lost my job and money it's tight, I do know the importance of eating grass-fed meat. I do try to get organic eggs and once in a while I get grass-fed ground beef which tastes to awesome, but it's hard being that it's expensive. I think it's wonderful you guys are giving away a whole cow! It would be so nice if I win! Soon I would start working again and I most definitely start buying grass-fed meat again. Thank you and have a nice day!!!

I cannot believe how much variety you have—this is great!! Finding animal products that come from a healthy environment is so difficult. I don't know how the beef from the grocery store was treated or where it came from, or even what chemicals have been added to it.
What you all are doing is awesome. Keep up the good work!!
Posted @ Sunday, September 18, 2011 7:57 AM by Katrina Cordova
I discovered you about 8 years ago when I searched for a source of pemmican. Since then I've been enjoying all your products.
I also love that you offer a wide variety of organ meats and bone marrow, unlike other vendors.
It's hard to find high-quality pastured animal products and especially animal fats. The importance of fats can be explored at the Weston Price's and Nora Gedgaudas' sites.

It's pretty cool that you can get beef from Tasmania to supplement your regular stock rather than trying to overbreed the US stock or supplement with grain fed stock.

I'm impressed by the practices the vendors use to ensure healthy animals. I do have a question though, what is the typical diet fed to the pigs?
Posted @ Sunday, September 18, 2011 9:27 AM by Chelsea W
Thanks for all the great information! I think this post is an example of what you should keep doing with this blog. It is well written, carefully edited, and features beautiful photography to draw the reader in.

Some suggestions would be to improve the consistency of your photography, and lead every article with your best photo. I would move all the +1 and like stuff to the bottom of the post.

Also, simplify your tag system to maybe four or five topics: product info, recipes, health, contest. Those are all things I'm interested to read about!

Posted @ Sunday, September 18, 2011 9:28 AM by Ella
Wow. You guys are doing things just RIGHT! So many people are finding out how awful GMO's are and how fantastic natural products are and then THEY CAN'T FIND the good stuff! I know I struggle with finding (and affording) the good stuff and then feel a litle guilty when I feed my family the junk I can find... So glad you have increased you web visibility and wish you continued outstanding success in all that you are doing.

I just received my bucket of beef tallow. I haven't used lard or anything like this in 30 years. However, a couple months ago my husband had severe chest pains and I had to take him to ER. He had two arteries blocked 95 and 80% and received two stents. This emergency led me to research prevention of this happening again. I have not been much of a meat-eater myself, and have generally adhered to the current heart-healthy eating plans. However, my search has turned up the Paleo diet which I feel now is more like how our grandparents ate and since they lived to a ripe old age, we're now switching over, or "back" if you will. I fried corn tortillas for taco's last night in the tallow, they were the best tasting! I'll be trying this out in as many recipes as I can to reap the many benefits of grass-fed fat. The hamburger we received with the order was still frozen, all the way to California, and very tasty and needed no seasonings. Unlike store-bought ground beef, it HAD taste! I'll definitely be placing another order soon. Thank you guys for this awesome service and all the detailed info on your website.

What? No pictures of the pigs outside? I'm aware that they can be difficult to keep in a real pasture, but the pig business needs more compassionate, responsible farmers to show the world it can be done.

I went to school in Missouri and think it's funny that it wasn't until I moved back to the East Coast that I found you guys!

I bought a Tri-tip Roast from you, but am really unsure what to do with it? Any recipe or preparation ideas??

Thanks so much :)

I was just wondering about the value/benefit of consuming the beef connective tissue. Does it benefit our connective tissue?
Posted @ Sunday, September 18, 2011 10:40 AM by William Stephens
US Wellness meats is the only place I go to get my beef products. I'm glad to know from where my food is coming. Until you've had grass-fed beef you don't know what you're missing. Also I am now addicted to Beef Pemmican honey-and-cherry-free bars. They are the perfect snack. US Wellness meats should come with a warning label: Highly addictive products lol. If you can get past that ew factor many people have for some reason, their offal is exquisite.

Congrats on the 11 years, and thank you for the enlightening article!

Wanting a whole lot of pemmicans right about now...
Posted @ Sunday, September 18, 2011 10:42 AM by Jason
Nice journey. Someone such as I on the Paleo diet, your company is enticing. I just ordered some pemmican to consume post-workout, which I might receive on Tuesday, and I can't wait to receive it. Hopefully I'll be saving up enough to make future purposes.

And thank you for telling us about your climate conditions. I'm actually striving to set up my own private farm, and I've yet to make a decision on where to settle. Your information is definitely helpful.

Thank you for all that your company has done to ensure quality during these last 11 years. I'm so happy that there are still companies that are committed to REALLY serving their customers best interests.

I've been following a GAPS diet / Paleo diet for the past 98 days, and my health has dramatically turned around from what it was previously.

Eating quality, grass fed meat is often one of the last changes made when people start following a more ancestral diet. It is not an option!

I've bought several times from your company, and will continue to do so in the future. Thanks again!

This is great info! I enjoyed reading it. My husband and I are delighted with our meat purchase! We are especially impressed with the sugar-free hot dogs! I thought it would be impossible to get my husband to switch his brand of hot dogs (believe me I tried!), but grassland beef HAS done it!! He loves them!!

Thank you!! The grandchildren and their parents love them too!! You have customers for life!!

It is a pleaure to eat products that have not been treated with (poisons). The taste of the meat and shrimp are very tasteful and reminds me the way food tasted when I was younger.

The pot roast is out of this world.

Hey US Wellness Team! Was turned on to your site by a friend and I can tell right away from this posting why he encouraged me to try your products. You guys obviously are one of the last remaining "small farms" out there that have a great shot at changing a lot of perspectives with regard to the food industry. It's nice to see pictures about where your animals are located and how they are treated. For someone who already knows about some of the practices in the commercial meat industry, your farm is very refreshing. But i would also advise you guys to contrast your approach more strongly with what is actually going on in the commercial food industry. Maybe you have that written up at some other place on your website, but I would raise awareness at every chance you get! Thanks so much! Excellent post!

I love that we have the internet and the availability to find wonderful wholesome products for our families! I am from a family of pork lovers (mmmm... bacon!) I am in the process of budgeting to afford sides of pork and beef - our desire is to feed our family the very best. Thanks for offering your products and services thru the internet.

I struggled with my weight and health for many years, trying just about every low-fat diet available. I was always hungry and miserable. Then I discovered the research about how our ancient ancestors ate before agriculture and how our bodies are actually made to thrive on fat. Now I can eat delicious food until I'm satisfied. I'm grateful for the miraculous animals that can take simple grass and turn it into the most succulent and nutritious food. I buy much of our meats from US Wellness and visit the website often looking for specials and information. Keep up the good work and you'll keep my business.

Thank you so much. I really like to know where my foos comes from so I can make more educated decisions. The closest I get to that in a normal supermarket is a label thast says prodcued in Ecaudor or some other place, if I am lucky.

Greetings. It's great to see where US Wellness meat and dairy products are raised. I've been a US Wellness customer since the beginning; back when it was grassfedbeef.com. I've tried many of the products from US Wellness Meats and have always been completely satisfied. I hope US Wellness Meats is around for another 11 years and beyond since I'll be a lifetime customer.

Great blog! I never would have known about it if it weren't for Mark's Daily Apple. I haven't had a chance to really go through it yet, but what do you guys think of wild boar? I had a great local source when I was living in NB, Canada and it was the tastiest meat ever. If you haven't had a chance to try it, add it to your list!

I have been buying products from John and US Wellness Meats since around 2005 back when my family and I lived in Iowa. Observing the evolution of products, the site, and the business has been a really wonderful experience. The customer service is top notch, and I have not found better meat sources anywhere else I've lived including Northern California, Iowa, upstate New York, the Seattle area, and now Montana (of all places)! There must be something special about the people and that lush green grass of Missouri! Congrats to all!!!

I would love to buy my meat from a local farmer, but can't get beef, lamb, chicken, and bison in one order. I also have to order 1/4-1/2 of beef and some of the cuts included I don't care for or I fail to cook well!

If everyone ran businesses like these farms, our food system would be a lot less screwed up. It's refreshing to see farms that are more concerned with the ethics and quality of their product, instead of the profits they can make.

Thank you for not using GMO's. That means a lot to our family and turns us away from buying from farms, co-ops etc...

Found your site on Marks Daily apple....Signed up for your newsletter, and saw there is a contest going on. Please enter me ;) - Glad to have found you guys, wish you operated a local meat market near me, very sad that your products are not the mainstream in EVERY SUPERMARKET IN AMERICA! I am also interested in "cowshare" as in Ann Farr's post above

Brilliant products. I especially love that the consumer get's to see the animals who give their lives for us. It would be great if one day, the packaging could include a seasonal image of one of the animals. I love showing my kids where their food comes from.

I was referred to your website by MDA and I'm so excited to start looking at the products you offer. I'm most excited about being able to get the not-as-common (in the grocery store) meats and I feel confident that you provide excellent quality!

The world would be a less favorable place to live without Ranchers like you. I inform everyone I can of the benefits of grass fed animals and how important it is to support folks like you and not the mass produced grain fed meat industry out there..Keep up the GREAT work!!

Always love receiving your newsletter lots of interesting tidbits. We are lucky our Weston Price chapter carries your meats sometimes but organs are hard to come buy. The husband adores your spicy beef jerky so much I have to literally beat him away from it sometimes lest it all run out. Keep up a great job on the beyond fantastic products!

I found you guys through MDA too, and I had no idea you have rabbit! That is amazing. I grew up in the UK where rabbit is a standard game meat, and so comforting and delicious!

Congratulations on 11 years of selling the best meats I have ever tasted! I have been so happy with every order I have placed, I tell all my friends whenever I have the chance. The filet mignon is the best I have ever had, and I have ordered in some pretty swanky restaurants!

I am such a fan. My favorites are your pemmican bars (the no-cherry kind!), your knuckle bones (they gel up for the perfect bone broth) and your headcheese (sliced and fried in grass-fed butter is yum). I'm a customer for life.

I've been eating grass fed meats for several years now and yours is the best. We enjoy all your have to offer for sale Love that I can buy so much from one place, being in the Pacific NW, we get our products the next day and all is 100% completely frozen, not even the slightest melt and that includes the summer :)

Thanks for providing a healthy, guilt free, and tasty option for my family. As a parent, I cannot with good conscience knowingly feed my family anything that would do them harm (pesticides, hormones, etc.) Oh and I myself LOVE beef prepared rare so there's that!

Thanks so much for the information on your farmers! (love the photos!) This answers questions I have been thinking abour. And generated another:

Are your turkeys soy-free?

Love your Pemmican!

Really happy to see your pork offerings have some certification for animal welfare. True pastured pork is very hard to find (and very expensive) and this seems like at least a step up from what you find in the grocery store. Thanks!

I live in rural Western WA where there is a thriving local food movement. We do not have anyone processing meat without chemicals so although I buy my beef and pork by the half I am supplementing with your jerky, sausages, bologna & salami which we love. I would love to see a satellite US Wellness out here.

Thanks to all of the questions, here are some answers for you all!

Mary S.- We sold goat for many years but had difficulties keeping it in stock due to lack of production. We may have it again in the future.

Terri D.- Please see this link: http://www.grasslandbeef.com/Page.bok?file=faqs.html#meat I think it will answer your question!

Erin- Yes, these pictures are from where the actual products come from!

Dennis V.- That picture was taken in Tasmania where we get a few of our beef products from.

Tina B.- Yes! We will have pastured turkeys for the holidays. They usually arrive closer to Thanksgiving.

Ann F. and Lisa B.- It's not likely that we'll ever offer cowshares, but nothing is completely out of the question!

More answers to come!

For the longest time I couldn't figure out why the meat and dishes using butter had no taste. They certainly did when I was young. The biggest clue was that I could not get my scrambled eggs to taste nearly as good as my grandmothers. What's there to scrambled eggs? I even got the pan she used to use, and still nothing.

I quickly discovered that it was the butter. My scrambled eggs have tasted great, once I used the butter from Wellness Meats.

The store bought meat has no flavor - nothing like ti used to. The grass fed beef from Wellness Meats is delicious.

Thanks for all your comments and questions!

Lisa R., Kelly E., and Chelsea W.- Pigs are antibiotic free from birth and are never confined. Pigs have the herb oregano in the diet which improves their immune function. The rest of the mix is what you would have seen pigs eating in the 1960's before the confinement industry was initiated. Corn is the base energy ingredient.

Terrell B.- Turkeys are antibiotic free from birth. Ration is a conventional turkey ration with corn as the primary energy source and does contain some soy.

William S.- When cooked long enough, connective tissue breaks down into gelatin which has many health benefits! The Weston A. Price website has lots of info about it: http://www.westonaprice.org/food-features/success-with-grass-fed-beef And here's another site of interest: http://www.cheeseslave.com/2011/07/01/beef-stock/

I ordered a bunch of your products about a month ago and looking forward to placing another order when I get paid on Friday. Your meats are excellent!! I'm amazed at how tender the beef is- made kabobs a couple of nights ago for some company we had over for dinner, and they were equally impressed. Looking forward to our pot roast for dinner tomorrow night :o)

I have enjoyed your meats for about one year now. They taste great, and knowing the health benefits makes it even better. I am one a limited income and can't buy as much as I would like. I really miss the butter supply you had before, and the cheeses are a special treat. Reminds me of when I was young, and the FDA didn't control and ruin everything, and there were still local farmers instead of factory farms. Thanks for your good work supplying what everyone needs.

We don't order very often because most of our family meat supply comes from elk hunting and local biodynamic farms, but when I do order I always like what I get! I especially like the raw milk cheeses.

I used to buy Grassfed Beef from a popular retailer that rhymes with foal dudes but my job transferred me to a small towne and they ain't got none here. I've ordered from a different website, I was disappointed and it was difficult to believe that the junk I got was actually grassfed. I am pleased with the quality of Grassland products.

The information about livestock raised on the food they were genetically intended for is reassuring, I hope it is the truth and not just a deceptive gimmick. Even more important is that the animals are treated humanely. They are going to involuntarily die to provide us with sustenance and commercial goods, they should be treated with kindness and concern for their comfort while they are alive.

I hope that more ranchers will join the movement to improve the quality of product they are providing to their fellow citizens. I also hope that society will realize what is going on with their food and choose options that will improve conditions for the environment and the livestock.

So much is made of the fact that the diet of the cattle determines the nutrient content of the beef, including the Omega 3:6 ratio. I cannot find, however, anything describing the diet of the animals that provide your pork or chicken. Can you elaborate?
Posted @ Sunday, September 25, 2011 5:49 PM by David Hime
